If you see anyone with nasal bleed, DO NOT PANIC Here are a few tips and Simple ways to stop nasal bleed

Nasal bleed is one of the commonest ENT problems. There are various causes of nasal bleed, to mention a few, dryness of the nose, nose picking, trauma to the nose, sudden increase in the blood pressure, people on blood thinners, etc,

The immediate measures…

  1. Reassure the affected person, put him at ease.
  2. Make the person sit in a comfortable position with the head forward and facing the floor.
  3. Pinch the soft part of the nose with the thumb and the index finger. Encourage mouth breathing. Wait for the bleeding to stop.
  4. Advise the person not to swallow the blood, instead, he/she has to spit it out. Swallowing the blood can cause gastric irritation and vomiting. This can futher worsen the nasal bleed.
  5. If available, apply ice packs over the soft part of the nose.
  6. With the above measures, the bleeding should stop within 10-15 minutes.

What next…

You can try using the over the counter medicines, such as xylometazolin or saline nasal spray.

  1. Intrnasal application of Saline or antibiotic nasal gel is also benefical.
  2. Seek medical help if the bleeding persisits even afer the above measures.

Things to avoid…

Blowing of the nose or removal of the clots from the nose within the first 24 hours is not advisable.

  1. Lifting the heavy objects and strenuous work.
