Introduction

Otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery is a dynamic speciality, with subspecialties of otology, neurotology, rhinology, facial plastic surgery, laryngology , phonosurgery, head and neck oncology, bronchoesophagology and paediatric otolaryngology. The ENT surgeon is involved in diseases extending from the skull base to the chest.

Overview

Patients with the common complaints of a headache, sore throat, voice change, sneezing, nose block and discharge are attended to in the ENT department. Patients who have swellings and infections of the face and neck including salivary gland pathologies are common referrals.

Ear pain, hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness patients are common ear complaints.

Patients with respiratory allergies are frequent referrals. Foreign bodies in the nose and ears are common paediatric emergencies. Impacted fish and chicken bones are emergencies in adults. Children with foreign bodies In the oesophagus and bronchus are also seen.

Facial trauma and nasal bone fractures present to the ER often. We are often called for repair of lacerations of the nose, face and ear.

Services

The ENT department offers diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear nose and throat and head and neck. Outpatient services are provided every day from Saturday to Thursday. Major OT cases are scheduled on Sundays and Tuesdays. Minor surgical procedures are performed in the OP and the minor OT. There are 4 OP consultation rooms with nasal and laryngeal telescopes and a treatment room with a microscope.

Audiological services in the form of Impedance audiometry and Pure tone Audiometry is performed in the sound treated audiology room.

The major OT is equipped with an operating microscope, endoscopes for nasal, oesophageal surgery and paediatric bronchoscopy. CO2 laser and coblation are also available.

Adenotonsillectomy, FESS, middle ear surgery, laryngeal microsurgery and oesophagoscopy is performed routinely. Surgery on the submandibular and parotid glands is also undertaken. Treatment for sleep apnoea is also offered.

Academics

The department is involved in undergraduate teaching for MBBS, Dentistry and Physiotherapy students. Teaching methods include ambulatory teaching in the Outpatient department, Lectures, CBL[case based learning] and seminars.
