Thumbay Hospital Ajman, the leading academic hospital under Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division has become the first hospital in Ajman to launch the globally renowned ‘Daisy Awards’, an international program that recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care provided by nurses to patients and families every day. The Daisy Awards at the hospital will be officially launched by Dr. Sumaya Mohamad AlBlooshi, Director of Nursing, Ministry of Health and Prevention, UAE on 1st April 2019.
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease; DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Nurses will be nominated for the Daisy Awards by patients, families, and colleagues. Every quarter, an award recipient who has made a real difference through outstanding clinical care is chosen by a special committee at Thumbay Hospital – Ajman, to receive the Daisy Award. Each Awardee receives a certificate commending her or him as an “Extraordinary Nurse,” in addition to an award pin and a hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” made by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group said, “By implementing the Daisy Awards at Thumbay Hospital Ajman, we aim to express our gratitude to the nursing profession by recognizing outstanding role models who leave a deep impression on patients and their families. This is a part of our continued efforts to promote excellence and best practices among all the departments at all our hospitals.”
